"Didn't think so." Valatrak turned away once more to buy himself a whiskey. Shadow released his shoulder somewhat roughly and let him rub it.
"Really, now, Shadow, you didn't have to squeeze so hard..." he muttered.
"Well, it appears to be the only way I can make sure you don't kill anyone." Shadow glanced at space-guy. "Looks like I'm available for dancing." She flashed him a grin and stretched out a hand. "Let's see if you're any good, hey?"
(Hey, come now, we're meant to be working on the story...)
"YOU're going away for a week. We're not working on the story for you." Valatrak ordered another whiskey.
(But - )
"Shh."
(You don't get to shush me. I could make evil things happen.)
"Can't be worse than what we've got now."
(Oh really?)
"Ah, fuck."

Crystal returned alone. The author had just revealed that Crystal's father wasn't executed during the war like everyone thought and has been living under an identity this whole time. Crystal had been sent back to the ship to sulk while everyone else got to complete the mission. No way was she going to do that. She took a seat in the corner of the bar and ordered a whiskey. What was the harm in having a drink or two while she waited for her next scene? Besides the place was kind of welcoming now that everyone had stopped trying to fight one another.

"Sorry for the music," Burke murmured as they slowly swayed to How Deep Is Your Love by the BeeGees. "I've no idea who's responsible for the selection." In truth, he didn't give a damn about the selection as long as it gave him a reason to hold a girl in his arms. The bar had emptied, and the bartender had been considerate enough to lower the lights a bit. It was really... cozy.
"So... I heard your author is away?" He smiled down at her. "For a whole week? Well, that gives us the opportunity to explore.... the town a bit, huh?"

[ROFL!!!!!]
(Come on, you guys-I need you all for this next bit.)
The entire sextet groaned. "Come on," Drew grumbled. "There's hardly anyone here now, now that most of the space people are gone!"
(Sorry, but I need you all. Actually, wait-Drew, you can stay. You're just going to be lying poisoned in a bed for a while, so you're probably okay to stay here for a bit. Maybe you can actually talk to some of the others, if they give you a moment to talk.)
"Lucky," Elaine muttered. "You don't have to go on a cross-country road trip by YOURSELF."
(GET IN HERE RIGHT NOW OR I WILL SET JON SNOW ON YOU AND YOU WON'T LIKE THE OUTCOME!)
"You've never even seen Game of Thrones!"
(Hey, I've seen a few scenes! Now get in here, or I'll set the squirrel Muse on you.)
"...fine."
"Hey-you guys get the fun bit," Drew teased. "I get to get stuck here with this terrible music."
"Oh, bad music-the horror."
"Shut up."

Virdon found himself back at the Subreality Café and, for a panicked moment, thought he was still in his scene 15 attire (if you could call it that). He started breathing again when he realized that he was back in his uniform - and it was even clean and in one piece. Their author might send them through hell and back in the story, but outside of it, she didn't seem to have a sadistic streak.
At least he hoped so. You never knew what your author would do next.
The bar was only dimly lit now; someone had mercifully killed Barry White (the music, not the artist) and had selected some quiet jazz. Burke was nowhere to be seen, and neither was the demonic man's companion.
Virdon decided not to dwell on those two facts.
He went to the bar and smiled when a glass of whiskey appeared before him. It matched his mood, the music, and the lighting perfectly.
"You want a cigar with that?" The deep voice of the bartender seemed to come from the shadows rather than from the man himself. Virdon hesitated for a moment, then nodded. If his author wanted to give him cancer, she didn't need the pretense of tobacco. Besides, she loved the scent of cigar smoke.
He took his glass with him and settled down in one of the alcoves at the far end of the bar. It was only lit by a single lamp hanging low over the wooden table, and in the soft golden glow of its light, with a glass of equally golden whiskey in his hand, and the heavy, sweet aroma of the cigar filling his mouth, Alan Virdon finally began to relax.

It was too nice of a day to stay insides the dark bar. She order a glass of chilled white wine and head out to the patio. The crisp liquid brought a smile to her face as she settled into one of the padded chairs. Sunshine was a rare luxury when you spent your whole career at the bottom of the ocean. The rest of her team was stuck in a meeting in the underwater colony and for the first time Crystal didn't long to be with them. Work could wait, while she basked in the beautiful weather. Besides the author didn't really need her for the next few scenes anyway.

Shadow gave a slight shrug. "Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, huh? I don't even know who you are yet." The corner of her mouth twitched into a smirk. "But yeah, we've got a break for now. I'm quite enjoying it."
(Psyche! AHAHAHAHAHA you thought you'd gotten rid of me huh? HA!)
Shadow sighed. "I take that back."

[Hate to break it to you, Chief, but our characters had A WHOLE WEEK to explore... the town while you were gone. Things happen when an author doesn't take their characters with them on vacation... ROFL]

The cafe was empty when Justin and Crystal entered. The had had a busy month. Justin had convince Crystal to come here with him now that things were starting to slow down. He took her over to a cozy booth in the corner of the room where they could have some privacy. It was rare they that got a chance to go on a proper date. Justin got them both a glass of wine from the bar and snuggled up close to Crystal in the booth.

Valatrak's frown deepened as he glanced around. Nobody here...okaaaayyy. On the bright side...
He pulled out a bag of streamers and began throwing them at random so they landed on bits of decor and stuck. Noticing Crystal and Justin in the corner, he sent a pink one in their direction, using his magic to direct its momentum so it formed a crude heart.
"Anyone else around?" he asked. "No? Mmkay."
The half-demon ordered another whiskey.

Valatrak found himself at the cafe again. The place was empty as ever, he noticed, save for Shadow behind him and Artex, Charlotte and Scarton trailing along further back. He sidled up to the bar and ordered a round of drinks while the others found a table in the corner and pulled up a chair next to Shadow. She smiled at him, and he felt his mood lighten a little. It was always nice when she smiled at him.
He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer. His other hand settled on the bulge of her stomach.
"We should come here more often," he said. "Y'know, when there are more people around."
"Only if you don't drink so much whiskey every single time." Shadow tapped his nose.
Valatrak shrugged. "I'll try not to."
-------------
[ooc/character descriptions: Shadow is around about 6-8 months pregnant since this is set AFTER my continuation series. She has short-ish black hair that stops just above her shoulders. Val and Scarton look very alike and are both gingers. Charlotte is the only human of the group, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Artex has a tousled mess of brown hair and looks to be the youngest. The demons all have red eyes.]

Vhil and Duia wandered into the cafe.
"This," said Vhil, pointing at the glass door, "is not a defensible place."
Duia cringed. She loved her twin brother, and knew that one's first exposure to the not-so-gleaming world of the Dradaeri, those who traveled time and space, could be a bit of a shock...but did he have to be...such a tourist?
"Quiet, you," said Duia, in a low voice, "This is an inn, still. I go to fetch sustenance. Behave."
He appeared to be fascinated by the unfamiliar texture of the plastic, while she went to fetch drinks.
Vhil grinned broadly as she returned with two cups of kava. He grabbed the cup like it was the life-saving nectar of the gods, which it was, and drank deeply.
"This drink," said Vhil, raising the cup and peering into it, "I like it. ANOTH-"
Duia snatched the cup out of his hand before he could do any further damage.
Kava is coffee.
Duia is short and thin and has straight shoulder-length red hair and freckles. Vhil has wavy brown hair tied at his neck in a ponytail. They're both dressed fantasy fashion.
Also, based on the first post, this seems exactly like Storyland, my metastory fantasy...

Valatrak frowned at the two newcomers. They looked incredibly out of place in the cafe, with their medieval clothing and all. Probably came straight out of a fantasy book. Hah, it wasn't like he could talk, with the red eyes and scars.
"Was that a Thor reference?" he called.
Not that they'd know what Thor is, but oh well.

"No," said Vhil.
At the same time, Duia said "Yes."
They looked at each other.
They looked at the strangers.
"I do believe that the fabric of reality occasionally breaks open to the Eldritch Realms for the purposes of comedy," said Duia.
