The bar was quickly getting crowded now - not only were there two big groups of people (the sailors, who looked as if they were scouting out enemy territory now - thank you, Pete! - and the group of vaguely medieval looking teenagers who were trying to order drinks that their author would disapprove of if she were here), but now two Asian boys were mingling, too. Virdon wavered a moment between the urge to trail Pete and make sure he didn't get into the barfight he was itching for, and going to the sailors' table to apologize for his behaviour. Both options made him feel more like a parent than Burke's superior officer, but then the distinction had never been that sharp when it came to Pete...
Barry's deep voice filled the room. "Your sweetness is my weakness..."
Burke was eyeing the red-eyed man's partner with a glint in his eyes.
Virdon tiredly rubbed his face. He'd switch to something stronger... beer just didn't cut it on a night like this. But first...
He grabbed the free beer that was warming on the counter and went over to the sailors' table. "I'd like to apologize for my colleague's behavior earlier," he said and forced himself to smile. All I wanted was to get drunk in peace. "He recently lost a dear friend. He's... mourning..." His eyes wandered to Burke who was asking the demon's silent companion for a dance. "He's... good at compartmentalizing," he added a bit sheepishly. It was true - sometimes he envied Pete for that survival skill.

Compartmentalizing was something Crystal could certainly understand and she appreciated the apology. It was something she had done for Grady several times in the past so she got where he was coming from. "No harm done."
"Besides it's not like it's really his fault. Personally I blame all of this on the authors. If they would let us be for awhile we might know how to unwind a little," Desi said as she emptied her glass.

Virdon flinched at the other woman's remark. Clearly she hadn't yet experienced the agony of Fading... when the author's Imagination turned elsewhere and left a fictive struggling like a fish on dry land...
He forcefully turned his thoughts away from the memory, but the look their commander gave him told him that something must have shown on his face. He cleared his throat and nodded at a free chair. "Mind if I join you?"

"By all means," Crystal said as friendly as she could.
"I'm Justin," He held his hand out to the man. "Why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you guys from?" He said with genuine interest. Thank god for Justin, he could make anyone feel welcome with just a flash of his smile.

"Thanks." Virdon was glad he could sit down for a bit. Too many beers, that reminder of Fading, Pete, that last scene of their story, and Pete, had taken their toll. He thought he could still feel the ghost of the head wound he'd sustained in that last scene.
"We're from Earth," he began. "We were on a mission to Alpha Centauri - the first faster than light travel in the history of mankind - but something went wrong. We were sabotaged and crashed on an unknown planet. At first we thought we'd crashed on Earth, but..." He took a deep breath. "That's not the case, apparently. We recently... encountered... the ruling species of that world. They look... a lot like apes." He cast a quick glance around the table. It sounded even more ridiculous here than back there, when Burke had cried out in utter disbelief, 'it's a goddamn ape!'

"Desi and I are from Earth," Justin said "We're part of a military exchange program serving on the planet of Neophia, which is where the rest of these guys are from."
"It's too bad you didn't crash land there, we're a lot less hairy." Grady said.

Virdon was glad that Burke wasn't around to comment on that last sentence. "Well, it's our original story universe... though our author has promised us a - a 'face job', she called it... so we could switch over into her original stories." He hoped she'd keep her word. It would be so reassuring to have a permanent home in an author's original universe. No more danger of Fading...

Valatrak drained his beer and set it down with a loud thunk. He turned back to the Asian guy again. "Bodyguard, hey?" He laughed. "That's a good one, buddy. Heh." He flung the empty glass at him. "She ain't a bodyguard."
"Valatrak - " Shadow began. Her grip tightened on his shoulder.

Yusuke sidestepped. Years of fights had heightened his reflexes. "Oh, was that wrong? Maybe I should have said girlfriend?"
Rin, having noticed the conversation between the two men, ran over. "Are you two going to fight? I want to watch!"

"...any place and time when you look at me I get weak in my knees...," Barry was crooning in the background as Burke made his way over to the couple at the bar. Hellboy was busy chatting up another guy, and his companion was grabbing his arm, apparently determined not to let him have any fun. There had been a reason women hadn't been allowed on ships and other male reservations in the good old times...
Time to distract her - hellboy would get his fight with the little asian guy, and he'd get to dance with a pretty girl. Win-win.
"You don't look so happy," he smiled at the woman. Up close, she didn't look completely human, either, but Burke wasn't prejudiced. Green skin or horns, as long as the rest was packaged nicely, he'd ask them out. "Wanna dance?"

Valatrak's gaze hardened. "That's not your problem." He would've jumped forwards and strangled the hell out of that guy already if it hadn't been for Shadow. Part of his attention, still focused on her, caught one of the space people asking her to dance. He silently begged her to accept it so she'd release his arm. No such luck, however.
"If you've got a way to handcuff Valatrak to the bar, then I'll take you up on the offer," Shadow said. "I'm just very slightly busy making sure he doesn't kill anyone at the moment."
"I'm not gonna kill anyone..." Valatrak muttered.

"Well... I don't have my handcuffs with me right now," Burke drawled and winked at her. "But don't worry about it, they have a bouncer if things get out of hand. Do you really wanna spend your evening babysitting the little devil?"
(Guys, I need you in scene 14)
"Not now, I'm busy!" Burke growled.
(Yes, you are - at your job. Scene 14, on the double! Hut, hut)
"You're a civilian, talk like one!" Burke snapped.
(Don't you take that tone with me, mister, or I won't write any girls into your scenes till the end of the series!)
"You wouldn't do that."
(I have you by the balls, Pete - literally. *grin*)
"..."
[Note: if you want your characters to engage in an actual fight, roll some online dice - if we leave this to the authors' egos, everyone will be supernaturally fast, which means those fights will be supernaturally boring]

(Ok guys camp has started time to get back to work.)
"Just when we were starting to relax," Desi said
"The least you could do is let us finish our drinks," Grady said.
(800 people are slowly suffocating to death, it's time to go. Chop Chop)
"You heard the voice. Grab your gear and let's move out." Crystal was happy to be going back to work. She'd take a rescue mission over a night out at the bar any day.
(I can always count on you Crystal. Now let's go destroy everything you believed to be true about your life. It'll be fun)
"I'm sorry what was that?"
(Nothing, let's go)

Yusuke stepped past the guy in front of him so that he could go order another beer. "Nevermind. I don't feel like fighting you. Contrary to how it might seem, I didn't come here tonight to brawl." Fighting had grown boring over the years when he'd continued to win each match against Kuwabara.
("You know, Yusuke, you and Valatrak seem to be an awful-lot alike. You might actually like him if you tried to get to know him.")
"Yeah, right. As if I could like someone like that."
("You said the same thing about Kuwabara...and now he's your best friend.")
"That's...that's different."
