Hey, y'all! So, I was just curious...do any of you have any interesting ways of doing research for your projects? I know some of us have it a bit easier, since you can just watch the show or movies (no offense), but...I'm just curious! I do a lot of my research online-either via Google or Wikipedia or even NaNoers if I can't find the info-or in books, but I also have a tendency to watch fantasy movies/TV shows to see what they do and if some of their stuff would work in my world. For example, the titular character in the BBC show Merlin was a big inspiration for how I write magecraft (as well as how some mage colors channel it), and the "berserker orcs" in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers had an influence on the berserkers. I'm just interested in seeing how you guys do research, and if there's any...interesting ways...that you like to do it! (including checking out torture books, Athaia... )

I did use Google Maps to figure out the train route Val and Shadow are supposed to take to escape from the Army and get back to London. Never knew planning a transit route on it would be so useful...
Almost all of my knowledge about guns comes from watching Demolition Ranch on YouTube. When you're in a country where everyone resents guns, you gotta make do. My knowledge of military stuff comes from cadets, and I did a whole first-aid course to research what medical procedures army guys would know.
Oh and then there was watching a clip on what happens when someone gets shot.

Oooh so that's what your course during camp was about? How cool! Also, how did you come by those cadets? They seem useful...
I'm on my phone now so I'll post ny links when I'm back home.

I usually tend to write stories about subjects that I'm familiar with (or that require no outside research to create a believable story) so I don't tend to do too much research for my story.
However, for the sequel that I'm working on right now (Dream Bender--second book in the Dream World Chronicles), my FMC, Lydia (who is a competitive horse rider) invites her boyfriend MMC, Adam, to one of her shows. I've barely ever ridden horses just for fun, so competitive horse riding is not something I'm familiar with. I did some Google searching, but none of the links told me what I needed to know for the scene. I asked in the Research forum on Nano Forums and got enough answers from the regulars there to be able to draft out the scene. I don't think it turned out half bad, but I'll look over it again in November.
Mostly, that's how it goes for me. If Google and YouTube can't solve it, I'll turn to Nano forums and see what I can find out.

Nah, nah, it WAS a legit course, I just happened to find out a bunch of stuff along the way. As for the cadets...well. I AM one, so y'know.

We have what you'd call a youth leadership program, like scouts and girl guides and whatnot except better. It's military-based (hence the name 'cadets') and runs almost exactly like formal military training, except modified because we're not allowed to 'train child soldiers'. You get ranks and everything and they've got army, navy and air force.
But army's the best one. *wink wink*

For me, I mostly look things up on the internet, like google. I did have to use map for The Change for where I wanted the 'base' to be and how far from towns and what towns, and the terrain, and things like that. I also had to find out how long it would take my MCs to get to El Paso from Rachel, Nevada and then from El Paso to Dallas and so on.

For Mors Terra, I decided to make Mors Terra as desert planet. Which is all well and good, except when you've never lived in a desert and you know squat about it except for how rain cycles work. Cue me doing a lot of hasty google searches every five minutes during my first nano---good time, good times.
I must admit, all my military knowledge comes from Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1 along with Band of Brothers. I just kinda tilt my head and squint my eyes and hope it looks legitimate so I don't have anyone come for my head. Although the total interaction with the military in the novel makes up like 25% of the whole plot, I'm mostly in the clear. I based Ryder's and Kathryn's ranks/duties on what you'd find in the Air Force and asked people in the Nano forums for clarification after I didn't trust Wikipedia's sketchy information. For example, typically in the Air Force the Weapons Officer is the commanding officer and the pilot is the subordinate. That makes Ryder a Lieutenant Jr. and Kathryn a Lieutenant.
