I use music a lot to capture the feeling of the story or the relationship between two certain characters. I thought it would be fun to share. Since I have a lot I'll only post two to get us started. I hate you, I love you by Gnash featuring Olivie O'Brien. This song pretty much sums up the current state of Crystal and Ryan's relationship, especially for Ryan. Warning for language. One Step Ahead of Me by a Great Big World. This songs sums up Crystal and Justin especially in the first book when she pushes him away to protect herself. Does anyone else have any songs that they listen to in order to help get in your characters head or just to set the mood?

Ooh, I'll need to listen to those. Can't pass up the chance for a good song. ---------------------- Two Steps From Hell is amazing, let me tell ya now. And since we're all sharing music, I might as well bring out the series playlist. Heart of Courage - Val's theme. Like, there are no lyrics, but it suits him. A lot. Picked by a nice guy on the Nano forums over See What I've Become - Zack Hemsey. Empire of Angels (Thomas Bergersen) - Shadow's theme. Again, no lyrics. It really fits in with her character, though. Also picked by that guy on the forums over Star Sky. Vanquish - This. I have no explanation for it. Just listen to the lyrics. High C's - Great for my action sequences. Then again, most TSFH songs are. Friendship to Last and Before Time (Thomas Bergersen) - For the opposite end of the spectrum. You know, the really depressing bits. Because that's what my story is all about. Heavy action and really deep feels. Let's leave it there with one more before I flood everyone with every TSFH song in history... I'll Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab For Cutie. This one's for all you Val/Shadow shippers out there. Which should be everyone who knows enough about my story to make a judgement on them.

I love that Death Cab song and it's perfect for Shadow and Val. I think I might go have a good cry now.

I have a really hard time with fitting music to story. I mean, I love TSFH to bits, but while I'm writing, I need silence. Sometimes I hear a song on the radio that I think could be like a theme song for a character, but it's still not a song I'd play while writing, or even imagine as a soundtrack for the movie in my head. That said, I have a few: Every Beat of my Heart, Rod Stewart - now I don't like the melody, but the lyrics are soooo Virdon: Seagull carry me, over land and sea To my own folk, that's where I want to be Every beat of my heart Tears me further apart I'm lost and alone in the dark I'm going home And for Burke, I Got No Roots, by Alice Merton, but that's more backstory related. Aand for the sappy parts (that WILL come, promise), I have Arrival of the Birds...

Since I'm working on/ procrastinating writing a scene between Crystal and Grady tonight, here is their theme song. Count on me by Bruno Mars

Chiefy, in which thread can you let people pick music for your characters? Hm... or does any of you have suggestions? You know my guys better than anyone else. I'd be interested what you'd choose for them.

Dragonland always gives me a WWII feeling for some reason. I think it also fits your Demons' War atmosphere, Chief. And I agree that Empire of Angels is totally Shadow's score.
Thinking hard about Crystal now... but coming up with music is really difficult for me, even for my own characters. Maybe my music palette is just too small.

It was actually the good old RAA thread, haha. Back in the day before it got taken over by 5 peeps. There was a question where you had to pick two songs for your character and the next person had to say which one was better.

Back in the day must've been years ago... that thread has been dominated by the same 5 people ever since I came back to NaNo two years ago. but nothing stops us from using our own RAA threads, right?

Haha, nope...and our RAA threads are awesome! I have a few videos on my NaNo playlist that I absolutely love...I haven't actually got any TSFH, which needs to be immediately remedied... But my first song (which is what I use to get myself in the mood to write) is the extended Game of Thrones theme song, since it always inspires me to write fantasy, which is my current genre... I also love my Lindsey Sterling dub-step violin pieces (cause that girl is BOSS), and all of the other soundtracks I've got! XD Funny story about music, actually...a while ago, my mom wanted to hear the songs my sister was listening to (my sister is 4 years younger than me) b/c she was concerned that the songs had bad words (we don't really use bad words in my family...the last time I swore was when I got left behind by my class in England, so I had no idea where to go when I arrived in Oxford...). My sister almost immediately asked why my mom didn't want to hear my music, to which I got to respond, "Well, my music doesn't have words, so..." XD

Haha, yes with instrumentals you're always on the safe side! Try Flight of the Silverbird from TSFH! Or Across the Blood Water... or anything, really. Evergreen I think that would fit to a scene where Virdon looks up into the night sky and thinks of his family, the poor guy... (at least the first part, before they can't help themselves and get the whole orchestra out to play heroically...)

Haha, yep! I've figured out that if I write to music that has lyrics, I start typing the lyrics into my story, which isn't good... I don't think I've heard those two yet...but I literally cannot stop listening to El Dorado...that thing is amazeballs! <3

I love "Flight of the Silverbird"! One of my favorite songs from TSFH.
As for me, my Camp story has no musical inspirations. However, my story from last November was all about dreams and I created a playlist for it, so I'll share a little about that.
"Dreams"--Cranberries "Dream On"--Aerosmith “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)—Emily Browning “Dream”—Imagine Dragons “Demons”—Imagine Dragons “These Dreams”—Heart “Dream Police”—Cheap Trick “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”—Green Day “Higher”—Creed “My Sacrifice”—Creed “What You Want”—Evanescence “Hero”—Mariah Carey “Dream Warriors”—Dokken “Dream Weaver”—Gary Wright “Enter Sandman”—Metallica
A few character/book themes for The Dream World Chronicles:
“Mirror”—Kutless (Adam's theme; first book theme) "Praise You In This Storm"--Casting Crowns (Lydia's theme; second book theme) "King of the Comebacks"--Audio Adrenaline (The Nightmare King--his real name is being reworked--theme; third book theme) ... Did that one just give away a plot twist?
(I don't know why, but I guess Christian Rock music just works so well at shaping the stories in this trilogy.)
Also, for Lydia, I totally see the Wonder Woman theme (from the new movie) fitting because I totally pictured Lydia (while in her Dream World fighter outfit) looking just like Diana. Actually, I definitely picture Lydia as like...a teenaged Gal Gadot. Definitely. Maybe also a little like Jennifer Lawrence in her Katniss look. As for Adam...I have no visual at all for him. Poor guy.

So FYI, TSFH has a new anthology up called "Power of Darkness". I feel like Chief in particular might like this one because the mood seems to fit the tenor of Val's story SO WELL.
In addition, you guys, LES FRICTION. Their "Les Friction Instrumental" album has some AMAZING stuff on it. Louder than Words and World on Fire are my favorites, but also Torture and Here Comes the Reign <3
