We've all got those moments in writing where something was meant to happen and then another thing actually did. Considering that Shadow wasn't meant to get attacked by a helicopter in Nepal (and actually why are they in Nepal specifically) and that I spontaneously killed off the MC's brother in a spur-of-the-moment writing frenzy one time, how about we share those neat scenes and plot twists that were totally unplanned? If you kept them, why did you keep them?
I'll also have everyone know that the scene between Healy and Val just before the climax was never meant to happen. But hey, it summed up the overall theme of the story really nicely, and it was a pretty heavy feels scene, so it stuck around. Plus you all know how much I love feels scenes and torturing characters hahahahaha.
Anyway, enough rambling about my story. Share what you've got!

I love when stories take on a life of their own like that. The best example of this in my story isn't really a scene or plot point, but a whole character. Grady was not suppose to be as important or involved in the story as he is now. My original intention for him was to basically be comic relief, he'd come in say a few snarky comments and that was about it. However, when I started to get deep into Crystal's motivation I realized that I needed something other than a love for work to explain her unwillingness to risk her military lifestyle. She needed to have a sense of belonging in the military that she didn't have outside of it, which would require her have formed relationships with people in the military prior to series. So gave him and Crystal a past and things spiraled out of control from there. I never imagined that Crystal and Grady would have the crazy strong bond they do now. Grady has taken over scenes that were originally between Crystal and another character. Notably, Crystal discusses the kiss between her and Justin with Stiner up until draft 5 then Grady stole that scene from her and outside of the hospital when she is waiting to see if Tyler is ok Justin came to comfort her in the original version but now it's Grady.
Grady is my biggest problem child. He is constantly surprising me, which I think is the reason he might be my favorite character to write.

I'm with hollyash. I had a character walk into the scene and change the entire course of my camp rewrite in April. She was not in either of the two original drafts; and then in the new one, she was supposed to just snark one of the MCs and then get killed to show how badass the villain is. Instead, she stuck around, became said MC's new confidant and almost-lover, saved his life, saved his life AGAIN, and in the next book, had become a part of their little ragtag family. (She also possibly ended up marrying the group's doctor. Jury's still out on that one). I actually try to arrange the plot and leave space for stuff like that to happen, though. I love when my characters surprise me, or when I'm in the middle of my outline and all of a sudden a whole new path opens up at my feet. It reminds me of that quote, "No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader." My best stuff (characters, plot points, action scenes, etc.) always seem to be the ones I don't premeditate.

I had a big unexpected thing when Flynn suddenly developed a crush on Elaine...I hadn't thought about that sort of relationship ANYWHERE in my books or happening to ANYONE, but it's working well with the plot so far, so... Most of my stuff is unexpected, though, since I'm pretty much pantsing at this point...although with this book and book 4, I should probably outline some...especially since this book ends on a cliffhanger and book 4 is all about a big civil war...

So...
I'm writing a new scene. It's a scene about the aftermath of the demons' first assault, where Healy is examining what's left of Cairo, meets a demon survivor and gets him to deliver a message to Zeltarc to stay on the demons' good side so they can bring back his family (they can't).
This was never meant to happen.

Unplanned plot points.... I cocked too many Chekhov's guns in the first story and only realized that from the reactions in the SSN thread!
Like, everyone is expecting Urko to stage a coup, which I never had in my current outline, but I see now that it has to happen sooner or later, I just set it up too strongly.
Or Zana surviving - that sprouts a whole new branch on that series' tree.
And then there's Zibaya and her "Gorillas' Lives Matter" thing...
*sigh*

Unplanned/unexpected scenes and plot points...um, like, my whole story. I had this plan and as I was writing, all those plot points ended up fleshing themselves out a lot more. Keiko and Yusuke were not supposed to spend a whole freaking chapter changing the tire on his truck. Not only that, but Genkai pushed her way into the story. She was not supposed to be in this one. But, yeah, this happens all the time when I write. I should be used to it by now. Haha.

*glares at Julian*
How about when a character flubs his glorious death scene, gets crippled instead, goes home and gets an entire POV and sub-arc?
Yeah, how about THAT, Bartos?
Golly gee that never happens around here.

How 'bout when I tried to make a simple throwaway line in the Never Last about the Neverland Wind being alive similar to the Wind in Rise of the Guardians. But then the Neverland Wind demanded more screentime and turned it into a whole debacle where the Wind felt slighted by Peter spending more time with Winifred and so it tried killing Winifred? I mean, I'm not mad but it just came out of complete left field xD

Nooooo what I never wrote this completely unplanned continuation that has been completely pantsed so far, why would I ever do that...I mean come on I have two more books in this series that were totally not unplanned. Totally. Yep.
Also, that portals arc from the 1st book. No idea where it came from.

Alrighty for The Mates, I've created characters that I never really thought I needed out of the blue. So that added scenes that I never thought was going to happen. Also, the way Parker was going to get into the hunters headquarters is different that I planned for it. It was supposed to be an accident but now it's intentional.

Ummmm, let's see. Valka shoving horse poop in a man's face. Not scripted. Gil and Duia. That entire ship sailed out of nowhere. Originally Duia was supposed to end up with someone else. Valka and Dennor. He was her minion. They were supposed to be enemies. That changed. Ain and Aava. Didn't plan that either. She was supposed to be a one-off character who was there to introduce intrigue. Turns out they liked each other. Gil's best friend Feder turning out to HAVING BETRAYED GIL BY WORKING AGAINST HIM THE WHOLE TIME . . That came out WHILE I was writing a scene with them, and it shocked me as much as it would the reader. Pretty much everything Nameless does. Riding off on a giant glowing black dragon swan that was previously attacking him. Carrying around a pet skull named Skull, whom he often converses with. Making friends with a magical feminist dagger of justice that he names Stabby.

Um...pretty much every scene in Dream Bender. Seriously, I had an outline and all these random scenes just came showing up. I still have yet to actually complete the outline (which might be part of the reason why I'm having so much trouble with this dumb story). For one thing, Trey was not really supposed to be in this trilogy, but he pushed his way in and now he's here to stay. I don't know if it's going to be in this book or the next one, but
[SPOILER: Highlight To See] Hana being the mistress of Death. Yeah, that idea just randomly crept into the storyline.
As for my Marina Humana trilogy which I've been working on recently. This is one story where I decided not to keep to a rigid outline of events. It's hard for me because I need that structure. So, basically, this whole story is one big series of unplanned scenes and plot points. Perhaps that's why I have such a hard time writing it for extended periods of time. :/
