I haven't done it myself, but I do write down any interesting dreams I have so I look back on it one day and possibly find inspiration from them. Unfortunately what half-awake me and normal me have differing ideas on what makes for a good story. For example here's notes of one I discovered:
"Big revolution happens by girl's father Girl freaks out because of its values She runs away Girl hides with some friends Parents hang out local high school Girl cuts hair short and dyes it Making her way to Ohio Boy goes after her. "
I mean it could turn into something but the same time I feel it'd just be the typical teenage dystopian novel xD
And here's a nonsensical poem I've never finished based off a maddening dream that was reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland:
"A woman came running after me, "Dear young one, dear young one! Have you seen two men scurrying by?"
"Dear elder, dear elder I have seen many men scurry by What makes these two men stick out From the thick of the crowd?"
"The first gent is slow and nice. The second gent is nice and slow"
"What's the difference dear elder?" Said I in a bewildered tone
"Oh a great many things dear young one!" Said she with a wise look in her eye "The first gent is slow because he is nice He does not rush to cause a ruckus! The second gent is only nice because he is slow He is a wizened old snapping turtle Who is slow to anger."
"Dear elder, dear elder how befuddled I am! By your description they are both the same How can I tell them apart?"

I do it all the time. A lot of the stories I write ARE dreams.
Sometimes I work dream stuff into my novels. Other times the entire dream becomes a story.
A lot of the times, I just get random flashes of images or bare bones ideas like the one above, but on rare occasion, I will dream up entire stories, or story beginnings. I once had a dream about two sisters - one lives in a lonely country estate on the moors in late 19th century England, and the other lives a thousand years in the future. They meet through a secret tunnel through space and time that connects them. Turns out the Victorian England girl's father and stepmother are in on a conspiracy of some sort, and so both girls have to team up to stop them from turning the future into a wasteland. It's not super original. I see it as kind of a cross between The Time Machine and Deus Ex Machina.
I don't know how many of you have read that part of my draft with Nameless resurrecting a bunch of dead people from hell and riding off on rainbow farting black unicorns, but that was a completely meta dream I had. The whole fairy tale that Ane recounts about the lonely man and the woman who was turned into a boat is also entirely a dream I had that I just wrote into Starfall.
I have a lot more dream bunnies, but honestly there are too many to list here.
I really like both of those ideas Kate! I love that the second one really has no answer. It reads like a cautionary tale. :-D

I haven't actually done this but I've been told that I should because my dreams are usually very imaginative. I think it's pretty neat how dreams can be pretty awesome and turn into something even better for other people to read. I've had a few reoccurring dreams that I could definitely expand on and make into some kind of story!

J.A Rama, the time travel one with the two sisters sounds awesome! Then again, I'm always down when it's anything time travel related! <3
Jamie, you should! I'm mean I'm not one to talk since I've never used my dreams in a story (actually scratch that; the dream Ryder has after the crash is based off a dream I had) but I think they're a great source of inspiration!
I don't know about y'all, but I don't usually dream about myself; for me it's like watching a convoluted story I'm not apart of. If I am involved, I'm semi-aware it's a dream and can control things to a certain extent.

Huh.
When I have a dream about myself, it's always the typical cliched nonsense.
When I have a vivid, lucid dream, I am always someone else entirely, like I'm suddenly inhabiting someone else's body. That, or I'm watching from above, like I'm observing it all being played out.
I'm not entirely sure that the story DOES involve time travel shenanigans, except that there are certain pathways where the future influences the past because the worlds are twinned pairs.
I will have to go into more detail on this at some point...although if I do, I might end up with yet another WIP on my hands, which is the last thing I want!

This is such a great thread! Kate, I love that Alice in Wonderland-esque poem. Wowowow that was so freaking cool!
For my part, I tend to usually be aware of my dreams and find myself thinking in the dream, "THIS WOULD BE A GREAT NOVEL." But it's been a long time since I had a dream that actually fits the criteria or that could be fleshed out into a story. The closest I had was in September, when I had to step away from drafting Starchaser for several days. During that time, I had two extremely vivid dreams about scenes from the series...one that never worked, and one that I'll be adding into Book 4 because it was just so dang cute.

I don't remember my dreams most of the time. I used to, but life has been stressful for a while now, so I just shut down. My characters then wander over into NAY'S dreams and have their fun there. *grumbles*

Thanks Nay!
Haha, I wish I had dreams based off my works. The last couple of days I keep having dreams I suspect are recurring, but I can't remember them once I wake up. It's a bit frustrating D:

I don't remember my dreams very often, but a lot of the ones I do find their way into my work one way or another. The most immediate example that comes to mind led to a story about a road trip inside a Rama-esque (not you, @agentdoubleohzero) space habitat.
